Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

We can speculate on what aspects of CA the 'neural pathways' and 'muscle stimulations' may represent, but there are not two fundamentally different substances or processes (CA and material stuff) interacting with each other. Right, but there are fundamentally two different perspectives. 1. A first ...

Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

It's funny, I've been reading Kastrup's Rationalist Spirituality and just reached the chapter on 'A Universal Memory of Qualia' this afternoon. It talks about the same idea. The brain's neural network is processing the universe and spitting out insights into the Universal Consciousness, where the ...

Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

It might be useful to learn of learning and memory defined the broadest terms as like the food pyramid. Yes, there are certainly different ways of encoding information in the body that effect behavior in different ways. My skepticism comes when I think about the information passing through ...

Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

See epigenetic memory - most likely what is happening here. https://www.nature.com/subjects/epigenetic-memory https://www.evolvingsciences.com/Geneti ... ry%20.html Great articles! While epigenetic memory is an interesting concept, I don't think our current understanding of it is enough to explain ...

Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

can there be any mechanism for storing information in biological structures other than storing it in in the synaptic neural networks? In theory yes, perhaps it can be stored on the molecular level, we know that an enormous amount of information can be stored in DNAs and RNAs, so in principle the ...

Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

I think these results suggest that neuronal structures don't store memory. Even if neurons survive the dissolution process, they wouldn't likely be ordered the same way they were in the caterpillar. Current theory suggests that it's the links between synapses that create new avenues of cognition. If ...

Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

I too am a bit amazed, but I've heard microscope work can be more difficult than it sounds -- sifting through millions of cells looking for something specific. Usually it requires a dye that might set something apart from something else so you can find it. And then there's the difficultly of ...

Re: Butterfly Memory Defies Materialism

In this case, they had previously thought that the brain was entirely dissolved along with the rest of the caterpillar body. They used the fact that memory persists as the evidence that pieces of the brain must remain intact. Pieces of the brain certainly could remain intact throughout metamorphosis ...
