Re: Any good resources on Western meditation?
Thanks! I took a cursory look at KoHW last week, reading the part about the "preparatory" exercises where you are to look at your day from a kind of third person perspective, and to appreciate growth and decay in the world. I've been trying this since, and I figured I should read on only a...

I'm looking for a good, practical guide about Western meditation / contemplation. Personal advice is also appreciated.

Re: The possibility of "magic" and universal transcendence
Hedge, So what you write above is definitely an implication of Steiner's philosophy, but also of many other thinkers in the 20th century. If that was the sum total of his insight, I would just say read Jung instead. But his philosophy is much more profound than that and points to insights into the ...

Re: What causes bad trips?
It's interesting and I've heard before that you should be in a good mental state when you trip, but, as much as anecdotal evidence is worth, for me it was pretty much the opposite. Re: The possibility of "magic" and universal transcendence
Well the key takeaway for me was that freedom is precipitated on knowing your mind/thinking, i.e. knowing why you are doing the things you are doing.

What causes bad trips?
I have a quite limited experience with psychedelics, but I had one ego-death level trip, which, while left me pretty shaken afterwards (after my ego returned), was a beautiful experience through and through while I was having it. So in short, I haven't had a bad trip yet. My theory, though, is mostl...

Re: Susan Blackmore: Scientific Evidence and the Near-Death Experience
Well you can't be surprised that on a philosophy forum you will get comments on the philosophical views of a person. Nevertheless I'm interested in what she has to say, I just offered my initial impression.

Re: Susan Blackmore: Scientific Evidence and the Near-Death Experience
Except I said she (seems like) a bad philosopher And mostly because of the illusionist thing. That's the most absurd and illogical concept of consciousness I can imagine.
