Mark Twain's The Mysterious Stranger

I just found this piece in the last and unfinished work of Mark Twain. It may be of interest to the group. "For as much as a year Satan continued these visits, but at last he came less often, and then for a long time he did not come at all. This always made me lonely and melancholy. I felt that...

Re: Sam Harris on how death might not be the end of experience

Once you accept that there is a subjectivity that is not generated by matter, and only the qualia appearing in that subjectivity is generated by matter, you're already in at least cartesian dualist territory. It's incompatible with materialism, plain and simple.

Our "other half-plane of reality", hallowed by thy name??
In the name of "other half-plane of reality", I command thee to grant me a new Lamborghini??

Music that near-death experiencers say is very similar to the music in the afterlife

Re: Do you think there is extraterrestrial life, and why?

Addressing this mostly to fellow idealists, because we've heard the potential answers a million times from materialist scientists. Do you think that if idealism is right this also has consequences regarding this question? To clarify, I mean only life in this universe, not other "spiritual dime...

Re: Winds - neoclassical metal for the existentialist idealist

I just remembered this band, having listened to them some time ago and really liking their music. This time around I also read their lyrics, and found that they all deal with metaphysics and spiritual existentialism. The music itself is top notch, 10/10 in my opinion and doesn't resemble anything a...

Re: Is it just me who is going through a lot of existential angst about idealism?

I'm honestly confused by what you're saying Mike. You say you reach this state where you realise that there's no eyes, only the seeing, so there's no "you" who has the eyes, and no "others" who see through different eyes. But the feeling of unity aside, you realise that the expe...

Re: Is it just me who is going through a lot of existential angst about idealism?

Having no firsthand experience about any mystery, I will not state to the contrary. But unless you know EVERYTHING about the entirety of reality, how sure can you be about that there are no mysteries? To me this seems like an overconfident statement. I suppose it depends on how one defines 'mystery...

I have only very recently began to understand what you and Cleric are proposing - much less grasp any intellectual argument, and even less so, finding an intellectual argument convincing. I am a bit of a 'commoner' - not inclined towards intellectual arguments, especially regarding Reality, where d...
