Re: The hard problem of conscious experience
I'm not sure if I'm properly following the discussion above - what I would offer is that according to Idealism - ideas, conscious experience, mind and what we call matter, all arise together. They can not arise from each other - they are the same 'substance'. According to Idealism, this 'substance' ...

Re: What is a belief? Who is believing?
A belief is a thought that at the moment of consideration, we find pleasing or satisfying, it doesn't necessarily mean anything more than that. Interesting question re WHO is the believer, because we can find thoughts such as 'I believe such and such , , , ', but can we find a believer independent o...

Re: Falsification of Scientific Theories of Consciousness
At the moment there are no scientific theories of consciousness, how matter becomes conscious; not any half-assed hunches or wild untested crazy ideas . . . so considering whether falsification of any theories is a bit premature.

Re: I'm A Materialist, Change My Mind
If I have to choose (and I don't think one has to choose between two options), a shared external world seems like a simpler explanation since it doesn't require any inference about a mind at large which I know nothing about. I can infer a rock but I don't have any means of inferring a mind at large...

Re: I'm A Materialist, Change My Mind
As a starting point, both idealism and materialism are beliefs. The existence of the rock as something external to experience is an inference. We can see and touch the rock, but we never find 'the rock', there is only the seeing and touching. We could also infer the shared nature of experience - we ...

Re: I'm A Materialist, Change My Mind
To a Materialist I could ask please pretty please show me this 'matter' of which you speak . . . needless to say this matter/material would have to exist outside of experience, outside of being aware of it. Of course this is not possible - no one has ever produced or found this matter, so matter rem...

Re: The Kalām Cosmologicacl Argument
I could come up with a pretty believable proof for the existence of sunsets - but until you've seen one any and all arguments are non confincing. After you've experienced a sunset the arguments are frivilous.
