Re: why denying the existence of The Light and The Tunnel among academia?

What i'm suggesting is that, like it's said in that old x-files poster " i want to believe ", many people want to believe, and if you want to believe in something, you'll be more prone to falling into the multiple errors and bias that gave us all the sort of superstitions and false belief...

Re: John Horgan defends not knowing

Of course modern theistic apologetics are lacking, but they are lacking for the same exact reason this "casual" dismissal of spiritual reality is lacking. They both assume "God" and the human soul-spirit is not an integral aspect of the Reality unfolding. They assume we should i...

Re: Does Anything Matter?

Not necessarily, the notion of "freedom" is itself complex and multifaceted, are we free to chose using information we don't have under your paradigm ? Not a paradigm, just a piece of practical advice. Pessimism isn't necessarily about wisdom and practical philosophy, it is often about on...

Re: why denying the existence of The Light and The Tunnel among academia?

Thank you Jim Cross for being a voice of healthy skepticism in this forum. I love reading this forum, a lot of insightful comments and conversations, but without people like Jim Cross it often devolves into confirmation bias and circle jerking. Yeah well, comments suggestive of 'circle jerking' see...

Re: A Peculiar Question for Metaphysics

Here is a question which may strike you as peculiar at first, but if you can resist the temptation to dismiss it out of hand, it may lead you to some interesting metaphysical inquiry. The question arose when, while visiting a friend, I glanced at his cat. Up until then, the cat had not seemed to pa...

Re: John Horgan defends not knowing

"THE PROBLEM OF EVIL Why do we exist? The answer, according to the major monotheistic religions, including the Catholic faith in which I was raised, is that an all-powerful, supernatural entity created us. This deity loves us, as a human father loves his children, and wants us to behave in a c...

Re: why denying the existence of The Light and The Tunnel among academia?

In addition to that, we now have decades of books, accounts, and movies about NDEs. Many people have become familiar with the accounts. This, along with our cultural background, sets up a narrative framework for understanding any experience one might have near death. Before Dr. Moody published his ...

Re: Does Anything Matter?

Non-determinism implies freedom of will, freedom to choose. Naturally, as you say, the actualization of the choise is not a consecutive process of chicken or egg problem, it's a parallel process - the real jazz. Not necessarily, the notion of "freedom" is itself complex and multifaceted, ...

Re: Does Anything Matter?

Suffice to say I'm optimistic that philosophical pessimism will eventually be relegated to an ideational evolutionary dead end ;) Maybe, i just hope that it'll happen through an increase of well-being and mental clarity rather that some darwinian pressures that just root out without any increase of...
