Re: Merlin Sheldrake on Ayahuasca and the interface of Science and Culture

Thanks for sharing this. After a little research, I'm not clear whether there are really different varieties of B. caapi or not. It appears more likely that plants just take on slightly different appearances, which may be reflected in their effects, depending upon local conditions. I know the same v...

Re: reality as unintelligible chaos, Dr. Hoffman's dashboard, etc.

You should actually read Hoffman on this. It's extremely likely we would build a camera to generate images we would recognize. Otherwise, nobody would be interested in the photographs. In other words, photographic images are nonveridical in the same way that our vision is nonveridical. At least, th...

Re: reality as unintelligible chaos, Dr. Hoffman's dashboard, etc.

true (but I think my point still stands) as even if a "camera is designed to produce an image recognizable for the human eye" - - it's unlikely we would have built the camera with the same algorithms of our alleged dashboard, or the PoF thinking. Even if we used a basic pinhole camera, or...

Re: reality as unintelligible chaos, Dr. Hoffman's dashboard, etc.

A camera is designed to produce an image recognizable for the human eye. That doesn't mean it is capturing everything. It certainly is missing major parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Birds can see part of ultraviolet spectrum. https://earthlymission.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/human-vs-bird-...

Re: What Wind Tunnels Can Tell Us About Consciousness

A model is a model of something. The cosmos is everything so it can't be a model of something else. Even if it were or could be, it is irrelevant to the discussion because consciousness arises in the organisms in the cosmos, not in the cosmos in its entirety. This is were we differ - except in the ...

Re: What Wind Tunnels Can Tell Us About Consciousness

In the spirit of one last try . . . If nature builds models in the course of evolution (time), then one instant after the Big Bang, it's all models. Reality has built\evaluated\converted itself into models. First, primitive models (perhaps). But really who knows . . . if nature builds models, evert...

Re: What Wind Tunnels Can Tell Us About Consciousness

You did say that nature builds models, I quoted you above. A model does not have to be a smaller\scaled version of something else - in the case of evolution as a model, a model is a pattern or figure as design for testing \ evaluation. For example, evolution developed the eye through a succession o...

Re: What Wind Tunnels Can Tell Us About Consciousness

Are you suggesting that 'nature' builds and evaluates models and searches for solutions? Lorenzop, Actually I should have just answered "yes"? That is what I am suggesting. It's called evolution. In the spirit of one last try . . . If nature builds models in the course of evolution (time)...

Re: What Wind Tunnels Can Tell Us About Consciousness

Other than that, I don't know how I can get you to understand that this is NOT everything is models. Not to belabor the point, but if as you suggest: 1. reality builds models (including consciousness as a model) 2. builds physical models, out of physical 'substance', builds models out of itself the...

Re: What Wind Tunnels Can Tell Us About Consciousness

Ashvin,

I didn't look at your Barffield quote but, having looked at it, I don't see any relevance to anything I'm discussing. I don't agree or disagree with it. It is just beside the point.
