Re: Bernardo's Shared World Problem

"An Ontological Solution to the Mind-Body Problem" by Bernardo Kastrup. Bernardo writes: Fact 1: There are tight correlations between a person’s reported private experiences and the observed brain activity of the person. We know this from the study of the neural correlates of consciousnes...

Re: Jaimungal meets Rovelli

Indeed. The Theravadans were weary of the claiming of any self whatsoever - even a unitary one. The focus is on enlightenment rather than any ontological claim. Rovelli seems very agnostic about ontology so it suits his worldview, and allows space for a subtle materialism. Well, the relational inte...

Re: Jaimungal meets Rovelli

At around 1:40m he talks about reality being made up of events or moments. Later he writes off a consciousness based ontology - using the buddhist idea of ephemeral moments rather than a unitary subjectivity. Well, that's a Theravadian idea (interpretation). In Mahayana the unitary subjectivity (Bu...

My question: how long is an event? at what point does one event end and another begin?

Re: How can surgical excision not affect consciousness?

Analytical idealism is a wonderful myth, and I appreciate how you have formulated your thread: i.e Here is a dilemma, how would Analytic Idealism address it? Here's a revised answer: Many bodily functions are present in phenomenal consciousness (that is, they are experienced in the body/brain syste...

Re: How can surgical excision not affect consciousness?

Easily done. The metaphor still works if you acknowledge it's limitations. I think we just have to question our conditioned assumptions as they conflict with the proposition we are entertaining. Even the notion of being 'reabsorbed' is nominal. Analytical idealism is a wonderful myth, and I apprecia...

Re: How can surgical excision not affect consciousness?

Thats a great metaphor. Of course if Bezos was too hands on with the shopfront, the whole organisation would implode. A balance must be struck!

Re: How can surgical excision not affect consciousness?

Hi Ben, I'm pretty sure that through yoga and meditation, one can become meta conscious of greater aspects of the body, maybe therefore sensing the difference between having an appendix and not. In Bernardo's understanding, a metabolising system can lose certain components and still function - as yo...

It is patently clear no scientific rigor goes into BK's analysis, only loose metaphors which are eventually conflated for that which they were originally intended to only be abstract spatiotemporal symbols of.

Well that didn't take long.

Re: Mind at Large as Brain

I like the idea of a see of photons. Just light with nothing to hit or reflect off. The phrase 'dazzling darkness' comes to mind. Maybe like God in deep sleep before he dreams a new cycle, Who knows? :) I imagine you have read the Asimov's Last Question for a different ending. https://en.wikipedia....
