Re: Prospects for a Phenomenological Idealism

PoF always seems to include more than I thought every time I return to it, so at this point, I am assuming it includes everything :) That's ominous, with respect to what I'm trying to do with PoF. Anyway, here's a link to what I've done so far (I'm in the middle of Chapter 4). Very much subject to ...

Re: Prospects for a Phenomenological Idealism

I don't know about Goethe's phenomenology, but maybe another fruitful place to look is Steiner's doctoral dissertation , chapters IV to VII. It looks like a more focused, precise variation of PoF part I. In short: I do intend to reread it (though I always get lost when he talks about Fichte), but I...

Re: Prospects for a Phenomenological Idealism

That's mostly how I think about it as well. It seems to me that, since Steiner himself spoke of PoF and spiritual science as an expansion of Goethe's phenomenology, that might be the most fruitful place to look for a more basic philosophy-science of ideational activity. Perhaps in Hegel and Colerid...

Re: Prospects for a Phenomenological Idealism

Scott, I was wondering: do you mean by that that you are writing a simplified version of PoF Part I, where you maintain the original structure and rewrite the insights in logical sequence, without the references to literature, and with present-day language, syntax, and examples? That would be an in...

Prospects for a Phenomenological Idealism

[Detached from the Reincarnation and Analytic Idealism thread] Right. I suppose I am mostly trying to explore how we can build a phenomenological gradient to such supersensible realities. PoF is one way, but I think your polar philosophical idealism is probably a useful stepping stone for many peopl...

Re: Reincarnation and Analytic Idealism

Alright, so it seems a key part of the phenomenological idealist approach is to highlight how all ideational experience is temporally extended. The normal habit of thinking has a difficult time remembering this fact and often lifts snapshots of experience out of a continuum in order to reach philos...

Re: Reincarnation and Analytic Idealism

In addition to Ashvin's response, I would like to also say that the existence of at least one subject cannot be doubted. Actually, it can be doubted. Many Buddhists do (the "no-self" doctrine). Subjective experience implies an experiencer (subject) that is experiencing. Yes, but you have ...

Re: Reincarnation and Analytic Idealism

So the completely parsimonious starting point is that there is all and only ideational activity. One cannot doubt that there is ideational activity (since to doubt is an ideational act). One can doubt that there is only ideational activity, but that doesn't matter, since one will never experience n...

Re: Reincarnation and Analytic Idealism

V., One can be more parsimonious than BK's idealism, as follows: There is thinking, feeling, and sense perception. For convenience, I will call all these together "ideational activity". Non-ideational activity would be activity of which there is no awareness, the sort of thing materialists...
