What is the difference between Mind and Spirit?

Post by Robert Arvay »

[copied / pasted] 'Spiritus Mundi' was a term used by W.B. Yeats to describe the collective soul of the universe containing the memories of all time. From 'Spiritus Mundi,' Yeats believed, came all poets' inspiration. [end copy / paste]

Consciousness is the only known phenomenon which observes itself.
It observes itself from within itself.

These two facts IMO decisively refute the physicalist worldview.
They do not, however, refute the spiritual worldview. They seem to reinforce it.

Yet, it seems to me, that the words, "mind" and "spirit" are not interchangeable.
They seem closely related, but not equivalent.

I have come to see Idealism as a subset of a worldview of hierarchy, nested realities if you will.
I would be interested to see how those on this forum might define the difference (if any) between mind and spirit.

Spirit is the primordial Cosmic principle of cognitive and creative activity.
The mind is a much more concrete (and thus restricted) manifestation of the spiritual activity, experienced in thought-forms and their metamorphoses. In other words, the mind is how the Spirit 'feels like' when formatted into the bodily and brain organism.

It’s a shame that these terms get conflated as in the ancient world they had specific meanings. Spirit is the all encompassing essence, which is impossible to communicate (it is that which knows communication itself, and is a totality so one cannot be outside of it to communicate it). However what we nowadays call spiritual is an accounting for how that whole can become numerous and specific, be that levels, energies or archetypal realms. The ancients would have broken that entire gestalt into soul, mind and materiality. Soul relates to the highest categories of individual and collective being. Mind is logos or discriminatory perception. Materiality is how being and perception experiences reality at lower levels.

Mind produces thoughts that come and go. It is mutable. Spirit (or consciousness) is the immutable "witness", the underlying "experiencer" of the thoughts that doesn't change. That's why conflating mind with spirit or consciousness is not a philosophically advisable practice.
