More than an explanatory model ?

Post by Xavier Gelard »

Can we say that the model used by Bernardo is more than an explanatory model ? I mean : if science describes the how, and not the what, and uses explanatory models, how can another explanatory model (mind is all there is) become a "truth" ? It's just something that can become verifiable by means of science (predictions that are verified or invalidated), but that doesn't mean it's what's happening actually. It's just a better (i.e. more accurate) metaphysic model than physicalism, but it cannot, as an explanatory model, pretend being the true one. Or am I missing something ?
My point is : if you say people take an explanatory model for a description of reality, your NEW explanatory model, even more accurate, will just, in the end, be ONLY an explanatory model.

Does this silence say : "you don't know what you're talking about, young Padawan" ?

I thought about my own questionand why it might sound irrelavant, and here is my two cents : Bernardo's model is an ontological one, it's not an "explanatory model". Science is an explanatory model", as it deals with data without asserting something about the TRUE nature of the things it observes ; but physicalism is not an explanatory model, it's an ontological position, as is idealism.

Yes, this is accurate. Metaphysical models are not, by themselves, explanatory in any scientific way.
