Philosophical Speculations

A brief anecdote of my own ... When our daughter was about 3-4 years old, every time we would drive over a bridge that crossed a river of any size, while she was strapped into a child's car-seat in the back, barely able to see out the window, except perhaps to get glimpses of the sky and treetops, she would start whimpering and repeatedly crying out "river ... river", while clearly in much distress, as if she made some terrifying association with that scenario. But she was never able to tell us why, or how she even knew there was a river below, only pleading that we don't go near any rivers ... go figure.
