This surely being the last hope for a place to rest, other than some outdoor alcove, I struggled up a steep staircase, and knocked on some stranger's door, opened by a widowed nonna who looked at me as if I might have been some dank stray dog begging for scraps, but nonetheless showed me to a walk-in-closet of a room, with a folding cot, and a lone bedside stool. And I can truly say that I have never been so grateful in all my life for such a meagre blessed shelter.
